David Sklansky: A Well-Known Poker Player & Author
If you have been a poker enthusiast for a long time now, there is no reason for you not to know David Sklansky. He is a professional poker player who has written a number of poker books.
Born in Teaneck, New Jersey in 1947, David Sklansky was enrolled at the Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania for one year before finally deciding that he wanted to pursue a career in professional gambling. Prior to his penetration of the gambling industry, he first worked as an actuary.
The passion of David Sklansky for such casino game allowed him to earn two World Series of Poker bracelets in 1982 when he participated in the US$800 Mixed Doubles and the US$1000 Draw Hi poker events. He earned another World Series of Poker bracelet in 1983 when he played at the US$1000 Limit Omaha Hi poker event.
In 2004, this professional poker player also triumphed at the Poker By the Book invitational event of the World Poker Tour, defeating such professional poker players as Mike Sexton, T. J. Coultier, Mike Caro, and Phil Helmuth Jr.
David Sklansky has written quite a lot of poker books and one of the most popular books he has written is titled "The Theory of Poker." In this book, this professional poker player informs readers about the two strategies of playing a strong hand weakly in poker, namely, slow-playing and check raising. He then explains thoroughly the ethics of check raising and discusses extensively the pertinent conditions for applying check raising. This professional poker player also emphasizes in his book the factors that poker players need to consider when they prepare for a check raise.
David Sklansky has also written a book with his fellow professional poker player Mason Malruth. The book is titled "Gambling for a Living" and apparently, this book does not merely focus on poker. Instead, it touches several types of gambling methods including blackjack, slot machine, and horse betting. Both professional poker players dedicate this book to people who are interested in eventually venturing into professional poker.
Another book that does not merely focus on poker is titled "Getting the Best of It." Unlike "Gambling for a Living," David Sklansky wrote this book alone. But similar to "Gambling for a Living," the book also discusses different types of gambling activities, such as keno, horse racing, and blackjack. One of the best chapters of this book is the one that discusses poker. Such chapter contains twelve essays that thoroughly offer ideas about poker techniques and betting strategies.
Other books written by this professional poker player include the " Tournament Poker for Advanced Players," "Sklansky on Poker," "Poker, Gambling, & Life," and "Hold'em Poker."
